Notes - Norris Lounsbury Fatally Injured by Falling Tree
His Death Came Friday Morning after Accident near Vassar Thursday.
Universal sorrow and regret is expressed at the untimely death of Mr. Norris Lounsbury, 21, son of Mr. and Mrs. Emory Lounsbury, of Cass City, which occurred early Friday morning, January 19, [1940], in Saginaw General Hospital as the result of injuries received when he was crushed under a falling tree.
Norris and a group of National Youth Administration workers were transplanting trees near Vassar when the accident happened. He received a broken vertebra and internal injuries.
Dr. E.C. Swanson of Vassar rendered first aid and then had the injured man taken by ambulance to Saginaw, where he passed away early Friday morning.
Norris Perry Lounsbury was born April 7, 1918, in Elmwood Township. The last sixteen years he has lived on a farm, 1 ½ miles west of Cass City, except about three years when he was employed at the Michigan State Hospital in Ypsilanti and a short time at the state hospital at Wahjamega.
He was a graduate of Cass City High School, having been graduated with the Class of '35.
Funeral services were held at 2:00 p.m. Sunday in the home. Rev. Ray Willson officiated and burial was in Elkland Cemetery.
Besides his parents, he is survived by four brothers, Leslie and Lyle, of Cass City, Harlan and Lynn, at home, and four sisters, Jessie, Ruth, Vera, and Carol, all at home, and his grandparents, Mr. and Mrs. Nelson Perry of Cass City.
Norris Lounsbury was an excellent young man and among his associates he was very highly esteemed for many qualities which endeared him to all with whom he came in contact. He was courteous and pleasant and made friends by the score and retained them. He was one whom it was a pleasure to meet. Of late he has been employed part time in the Tate & Leeson Grocery Store.
A number of his associates at Ypsilanti State Hospital were among those who attended the funeral Sunday. They are Harold Allen, Johnnie McAlpine, Alvin Blanchard and Delbert Reagh. Others from a distance who attended were Mr. and Mrs. Roy Topping of Caro, Mr. and Mrs. Robert Topping of Fenton, Mrs. Ray Lucke of Grand Blanc, Harry Reagh of Mt. Pleasant and Carl Reagh of East Lansing, and Mr. Martindale of Saginaw.
