  Henry C Friesen was born near Jansen Nebraska on June 3, 1889. The son of Isaac B and Catherina J (Classen) Friesen. He was raised there and attended Jansen schools. At age 18, Henry went to California where he worked in a grocery store for actress Louise Fazenda's father. Upon returning to Jansen he became a partner with his brother Abraham C Friesen in a mercantile store. Henry continued running the mercantile store on his own after his brother Abraham left, which was about 1912. He was often identified as the Friesen who had the mercantile store, thus the name "Merc", and this nickname stuck. At the age of 21 years he married Miss Anna Koop, daughter of Klaas R and Anna (Heidlebrecht) Koop on October 26, 1910 at the Christian church by the Rev. Thomas a Maxwell in the presence of H.A. Thiessen and Maria Thiessen. (Anna's half-brother and sister-in-law). In 1922, they move to Fairbury Nebraska. There they bought and managed a hardware store on the south side of town square, and in the 1930s move the location of the store to the Eastside. He remained in Fairbury until he retired, about 1944. Henry then moved to Long Beach California for his retirement years. Henry and Anna had three children, Ernest, Edwin Donna. His wife Anna of almost 40 years passed away June 4, 1950. He then remarried on May 27, 1952 to Cecil (Wills) Kerstine. Henry had taken a vacation in Canada and became ill, entering the hospital upon his return. Henry passed away September 3, 1963 in Los Angeles California. Services were held at Mottells Mortuary.
