Glen Statler, 78, died June 11, 2016 in Fargo. Glen was the chair of the Plant Pathology Department at North Dakota State University until his retirement in 2004. Glen was born on October 8, 1937 in Newcastle, WY to the late Inez & J. Everett Statler. He grew up on a ranch outside of Newcastle, WY and graduated from Newcastle High School in 1955. He married Judith Cummings in 1958. Glen received his bachelors degree from Black Hills State College, and went on to obtain his masters in Range Management in 1965 and doctorate in Plant Pathology in 1969 from the Univ of Wyoming. He accepted a position at NDSU’s Plant Pathology Department in 1969. He became the Chair of the Plant Pathology Department at North Dakota State University in 1988. Dr. Statler was active in teaching, research and governance at NDSU. His research was in the area of host parasite genetics of wheat leaf rust and flax rust. Dr Statler worked with plant breeders for varietal development. He was published extensively on host resistance and the host parasite interactions. Dr. Statler coordinated the Department’s involvement in the undergraduate Plant Protection Program. He and his wife, Judy, both took sabbatical leaves and spent 6 months at Cambridge Univ. in England and the AG Univ. in Holland. Judy Statler is a retired teacher from the Moorhead MN School District where she taught at Washington elementary school for 30 years. They enjoyed traveling, sailing, boating, cooking and spending weekends at their lake home in Minnesota. He actively followed the stock market. Glen is survived by his wife, Judy Statler; Daughter, Lori (Michael) Becker of Leesburg, VA; Son, Doug (Kim) Statler of Scottsdale, AZ; Sister Velma Butler of Casper, WY: Grandchildren; Tamara,Sara, David, James and Great Grandson, Conrad. Memorials are preferred to the American Cancer Society.
