Notes - Henry Adams was the son of German emigrants, Andrew and Margaretha Adams. Most of his early years were spent in Erie County, Ohio. The family owned a farm near Berlin, Ohio. He had two brothers, Orin and John, both of whom also served in the Union Army, but in other units, during the Civil War. On September 16, 1858, Henry married Rebecca Elliot at Sandusky, Ohio. On August 2, 1859, their first child, Sarah Rodintha Adams, was born. Henry enlisted in Company K, 100th Ohio Infantry, in 1862. He was captured by the Confederates in the Battle of Limestone Station, Tennessee, September 8, 1863, and spent about half a year as a prisoner of war. During part of that time he was held at the infamous Belle Isle Prisoner of War Camp at Richmond, Virgina. After being exchanged in 1864, he was promoted to corporal and served with his regiment in the later part of Sherman's Atlanta Campaign and in the Battles of Franklin and Nashville. His regiment was mustered out in the summer of 1865. Rebecca and Henry had four more children, all sons, two of whom died young. Sons Henry and Andrew were born in 1867 and 1871. The family moved to Vassar, Michigan, in 1880. Henry's father, Andrew, by then a widower, accompanied them. Henry Adams, veteran of the Civil War, died on June 2, 1907.
