Notes - John Adams was the third son of Andrew and Margaretha (nee Zimmer) Adams. His parents were from Germany. The family occupation was farming.
John had two older brothers, Orin (3rd O.V.C.) and Henry (100th O.VI.), who had joined the Union Army. John himself then enlisted, at age 17, on Nov. 23, 1863. At the time he joined the army his hometown was Milan, Ohio. He was mustered into Company D, 23rd Ohio Infantry. John served in the Civil War as a private and participated in General Sheridan's Shenandoah Valley Campaign.
He married Olive Booth in January 1877. They had six children, only two of whom lived to adulthood. He and Olive divorced in 1904. For a time John lived in the Soldiers' Home in Dayton. However, he spent the last years of his life living at the home of his oldest daughter Rose in Clyde. His age at the time of his death was 74 years,3 months, 5 days.
