10-23-1902 Mrs. James S. Tucker Dead

Mrs. Tucker, of the Herron neighborhood, died last Friday, and the following account of her life is contributed by her brother-in-law, Mr. W.H. Tucker, who has been here on a visit from Kansas for several weeks.

Mrs. Melissa Tucker, wife of James S. Tucker, was born in Madison county, Wisconsin, and died seven miles south of Cashion, Oklahoma, October 18, 1902, at the age of fifty-five years.

After marriage with James S. Tucker, they lived on a farm near Effingham, Kansas, from 1866 to 1889, when they moved to Oklahoma and preempted and lived on the farm occupied at the time of her death.

She was always very highly esteemed by her neighbors and she readily made friends with all those whom she came in contact. Many times during her last sickness she expressed her feeling of gratitude toward her neighbors, often using the expression, "My neighbors are and have always been kind and good especially in time of sickness, just as good as can be."

The funeral services were held at the residence, Sunday, October 20th, 1902 at 1 p.m., by Elder Allen who took his text from Psalm 90, 12th verse. His remarks were truthful and fitly spoken to the largest assembly of people ever convened on such an occasion in this community. Capt. George Martin who was for many years a neighbor to the deceased in Kansas, followed Elder Allen with remarks not only eloquent and truthful but accompanied with an expression of great loss to himself and family. The remains were followed by a large concourse of people to the Kansas cemetery, where they were interred. Thus leaving her husband and one daughter, Mrs. Ida Blair, with many friends to mourn her departure.
