Norma Bailey died May 5, 2007. She had suffered a brain aneurism, and was airlifted to Denver, where she underwent surgery. The surgery was successful but Norma's heart gave out. She was 94.

Norma was born in St. Louis, Missouri, the daughter of Max and Alma Reiche. The family returned to Haxtun shortly after Norma's birth. Norma's early years were spent on a homestead nine and one-half miles south of Haxtun, on other area farms and in Haxtun proper. Norma graduated from Haxtun High School in 1931. She lived in Haxtun all of her life and was an excellent town historian. Norma and her older sister Elsa spoke German, their parent's native language. They learned English quickly when World War I broke out.

While working for her father, Norma met and eloped with Ernest Bailey in 1934. They immediately started a family and subsequently had three daughters; Janice, Brenda and Kathleen. Norma was a devoted wife and mother. She helped her husband by doing the bookwork for his filling station and bulk plant. After his death in 1960, Norma worked at the Haxtun Locker Plant, as bookkeeper for Smith's Hardware and for a doctor in Sterling. She also did temp work for insurance companies later in life.

Norma was a vital member of Immanuel Lutheran Church, serving the Lord as pianist for over 25 years, treasurer for the congregation until she was in her 80s and alter-care chairperson until her death. Her community work included the Haxtun Library Board, Corn Festival activities and the Haxtun Hospital and Nursing Home. She was a vital volunteer in the Meet and Eat program for 30 years.

Norma was always interested in helping the youth. She received the Haxtun Volunteer of the Year Award in 2003. She will be remembered for her charm, wit, and her love of the Broncos and the Rockies. There was a special connection with her life-long friend Dorothy Sator and her family that lasted since childhood.

Norma was preceded in death by her husband; parents; brother Max, Jr.; sister Elsa Reiche; an infant sister; and twin great-granddaughters Allison and Bethany.

Survivors include daughters Janice Tubbiola and husband Bill, Fountain Valley, California, Brenda Girardi, Haxtun, and Kathleen Higgins, Arvada.

CAPT. DAN BENSON KILLED
MEETS WITH VIOLENT DEATH IN THE TREADWELL MINE
Neck Broken and Skull Crushed by Fall of Rock--Fell Thirty Feet--Was a Union War Veteran and a Pioneer Puget Sound Mariner.
Capt. Daniel Benson, a pioneer Puget sound mariner, met death February 15 in the Treadwell mine, on Douglas Island. His violent end came about through the fall of a hanging rock. It appears he was at work blasting in a shaft or tunnel when an explosion jarred the rock loose. It fell a distance of twenty-five or thirty feet, striking him on the head. Instant death resulted from concussion of the brain. His neck was also broken.

Capt. Benson had been employed in the mine since last September. He left Seattle for Alaska two years ago in July and for a while worked in Atlin, from which district he went to the Treadwell.

The remains of Capt. Benson and the news of his sad death came on the steamer Dirigo, which arrived from Alaska yesterday. The body was taken to the Seattle undertaking parlors, where funeral services will be held tomorrow afternoon. Interment will be made at Lake View cemetery.

Capt. Benson was a native of Saginaw county, Michigan, and was born in 1845. He came to Seattle in 1871, and resided here with his family at 913 Lenora street. He was a veteran of the civil war, having enlisted in 1862 in Company H, Illinois volunteer infantry. He served until July, 1865. Though he saw continuous service and distinguished himself for bravery, he never drew a pension or became a member of the G. A. R.

For eighteen years Capt. Benson ran as master of Puget sound steamers, notably the Chehalis, City of Quincy, George E. Starr, Edith, Washington, Josephine and the Eliza Anderson. He was a man well thought of by his many friends and acquaintances. His death is mourned by a large number of relatives. He leaves a widow and two sons, George and Orville Benson, and three brothers, J. S. Benson, for thirty-nine years a resident of Seattle, [unreadable line] Benson of Bayview, Skagit county. Mrs. Mary McCormack, of Midland county, Michigan, is a sister.
